The professional career for Jack Leiter, the son of MLB pitching legend Al Leiter, is really in its infancy. Al is just thrilled his kid is living the same dream he did.
Drafted by the Texas Rangers out of Vanderbilt last year, the younger Leiter has made just two appearances in the minors for Double-A Frisco. He's the organization's top prospect in the system right now.
But talking to Kevin Hageland and Cory Mageors on 105.3 The Fan on Wednesday, Al, who is an analyst on MLB Network, said his son still has so much more to learn.
"He's got a really good arm. He needs to do a variety of things to become consistent," he said. "They have to be completely ready. Because not if you have a bad week or bad month, it's when you have a bad month. How do you handle it, how do you get out of it, how's your mind?"
Hageland and Mageors are excited to see Jack eventually don the Rangers uniform, but Al told them not to rush it.
"Tap the brakes on little Jackie-poo," he said.
Al, who pitched in the majors for more than two decades, said getting to see his son thrive and learn and chase his MLB dream has been a highlight not just for him but everyone in the Leiter klan.
"We're just tickled and thrilled with what Jack's done and just the joy he's brought to the whole family," he said. "It's just fun for me to watch."
