77 WABC host Rudy Giuliani recalled the time when he was honored by the late Queen Elizabeth II following the horrific attacks of Sept 11, 2001. Giuliani spoke about the experience shortly after learning about her passing Thursday.
"I had the honor of meeting her and I had the honor of being honored by her," he said.
Giuliani was the mayor of New York City at the time of the terrorist attacks which killed 2,753 people. According to CNN, he received an honorary knighthood at Buckingham Palace.
"I never believed that honor was for me," Giuliani said referring to the accolades he received from Queen Elizabeth. "I believe that honor was for the people of New York City."
Giuliani said he has never been shy about the leadership he provided, calling it "some of the best leadership ever" at a time when America needed someone or something to believe in.
"I wrote a book about it with some flaws," he added. "If I didn't have the team that I had I wouldn't have been able to lead, and that's what I told the queen."
Giuliani said meeting the queen changed his mind about monarchy. He said he finds it "coincidental" that his mother died on the same day Queen Elizabeth II passed away 20 years ago.
