Former Ohio State and Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer appears to be closer to making a return to the FOX college football desk this fall. Richard Deitsch of The Athletic reports both sides are currently in deep negotiations.
Meyer indicated on a recent podcast appearance with Tim May that he was planning on returning to the Big Noon Kickoff crew.
Meyer held an analyst role on the show for two years prior to being hired to coach the Jaguars, and had a brief stint with ESPN in 2011.
The report in The Athletic indicates the top brass at FOX Sports isn't concerned with Meyer's dismissal from the Jaguars hurting his credibility with the audience. In fact, Deitsch writes that FOX likely sees some benefit to Urban Meyer being a polarizing figure in the sport.
While Meyer was coaching in Jacksonville last season, he was replaced on the show by former Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops. Stoops revealed earlier this month that FOX told him he could no longer be part of the show since he was coaching in the XFL next season. That league will be a direct competitor with the FOX-owned USFL.
