Pat McAfee on one hand could be considered among the many celebrities who have had their moment on the grandest stage in sports entertainment - WrestleMania. But on the other hand, as McAfee hyped up in the lead-up to his match with Austin Theory this past weekend, it was a childhood dream of McAfee's to be a pro wrestler.
McAfee spoke about his Mania experience with co-host A.J. Hawk on Tuesday's edition of The Pat McAfee Show, saying he watched his match back for the first time that morning. He also spoke highly of his SmackDown broadcast partner Michael Cole.
"I didn't want to watch, to be honest," McAfee said. "Michael Cole was like, 'Will you please watch?' Cause Michael Cole maybe had his best call of all-time."
McAfee referenced a pivotal point in his match where he performed a move on Austin Theory from the top rope. Cole reacting to the moment cheered McAfee on saying, "Cover him, Pat!" McAfee praised Cole and color commentator Byron Saxton, but said Cole, who is a friend of his away from the ring, was amazing.
"Michael Cole was awesome in there. He was f---ing awesome, and it was cool to hear," McAfee said.
McAfee is what they call in the wrestling business "Over" with the fans, and the nearly 78,000 in attendance at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas were rooting him on right from the start.
McAfee did defeat Theory, who in the storyline leading up to the match is portrayed as a protégé of WWE chairman Vince McMahon. McAfee was then challenged and defeated by Mr. McMahon before Stone Cold Steve Austin made an appearance for the second straight night to save the day.
The fans went nuts, and McAfee, who called matches both nights of the two-night PPV, ate it up.
"Those fans were incredible," he said. "It was so much fun."
