Over the weekend, news broke about longtime WFAN voice and New York Mets broadcaster Eddie Coleman retiring.
While talking retirements on Monday's edition of Boomer & Gio, another longtime WFAN voice, Steve Somers, came up. Somers had been at the station since 1987 before eventually retiring last year.
"If you don't retire at some point, a company has to say to you, 'What are we doing?'" producer Al Dukes said. "Otherwise all these people studying communications in college, there's no jobs for you if everyone stays until they're in their 80s."
Co-host Gregg Giannotti added that Somers was the kind of guy that would've worked until his last breath if Audacy had let him.
"Somers would have died on the air," Gio said. He followed that up with an impression of Somers giving out the WFAN call-in number before suddenly hitting the floor. "If he had been allowed to keep working that's probably what would've happened. I think a lot of people would agree with that. Everybody dies at some point."
Steve Somers, 74, was affectionately known as "The Schmoozer." He began his journey at WFAN hosting overnights.
