On the last day of August we spotted a dense colony of snow-on-the-prairie (Euphorbia bicolor) blanketing* the Blackland Prairie in Pflugerville. The next morning I went back with a stepladder so I could get a good angle looking outward and somewhat downward to emphasize the colony's expanse and snowy appearance. (Close-ups of this species appeared in a post two weeks ago.)
* You may be surprised to learn that the English word blanket comes from a diminutive form of Old French blanc, meaning white (from which we also get blank). That etymology tells us the kind of material used in blankets back then must have been white, or at least whitish.
