On August 29th we drove the 45 minutes east to Bastrop State Park to see if either of the Liatris species that grow there but not in Austin were doing their thing. Yesterday's post showed you some buds and two flower heads of Liatris aspera. On another of those flower heads I lucked out in finding a sachem (Atalopedes campestris), apparently female, that wasn't skittish about getting its portrait made. It probably should have been skittish about the crab spider at the base of the Liatris flower head. Maybe it didn't see the spider, just as I didn't till I got home and processed my pictures.
