Sports Media Reacts to Death of Jerry Springer

Longtime TV host Jerry Springer died Thursday at the age of 79.

After serving as the mayor of Cincinnati in the late 1970s, Springer debuted the Jerry Springer talk show in 1991 to mimic The Phil Donahue Show. In 1994, Springer revamped the show's format to become more sensationalized, which led to many controversial situations and confrontations. Springer concluded the program in 2018.

In addition to his scandalous television show, he was also a local news anchor at WLWT in Cincinnati in the 1980s and 1990s.

The show transcended pop culture, news, and current events, and reached millions of daily viewers during its peak.

Many in sports media were shocked by the announcement of Springer's passing, shared their memories of the host on social media, and fondly remembered his famous closing line "Take care of yourselves, and each other".

Anthropologists are going to have a wild time when they look at raunchy 1990s TV. Jerry Springer, Maury Povich, everything that was on MTV (especially the spring break specials), WWF attitude era, etc. It coincided with a period of great national prosperity too.

I was part of a Jerry Springer fan group when I went to Ball State. Every day, a bunch of us would take over the TV in the lounge and watch Jerry. I still think about that group at least once a week.
