There has been a ton of attention on the status of Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin as he remains in critical condition at a Cincinnati hospital. But there has been an equal amount of attention on how ESPN handled the situation in the moments after Hamlin went down and the time he arrived at the hospital.
On WGR in Buffalo on Tuesday, hosts Chris "The Bulldog" Parker and Mike Schopp commended commentators Joe Buck and Troy Aikman, sideline reporter Lisa Salters and studio hosts Suzy Kolber, Booger McFarland and Adam Schefter.
"The announcers have a different job. Not all of these announcers we're talking about last night are my favorite, but it has nothing to do with what they're like as people or whether or not they would show and have compassion in that moment because of course they would," Schopp said. "This isn't about whether an analyst says a team should've punted. It's all removed."
"I was so impressed. And wasn't everybody?" he added. "These are people that tend to sort of drive some of us crazy. But they were so impressive. They were so right."
Parker gave Booger McFarland a lot of credit for being the one voice in those early moments saying that the remainder of the game needed to be called off.
"I think probably like a lot of people I'm grateful that someone finally said that," Bulldog said. "Because nobody seemed to want to say that they should just cancel this game. I'm sure they have their reasons for handling that way, but I was extremely proud of Booger Mcfarland for saying that when he did. Because the decision had not been made at that point, and he said it. And it needed to be said."
