Reports continue to swirl about the future of The Michael Kay Show on 98.7 ESPN New York, with some pondering if Chris "Mad Dog" Russo could potentially be in the running to replace the New York Yankees voice in afternoon drive. Russo has put those questions to bed.
In an interview with Newsday's Neil Best, Mad Dog squashed any ideas that he could be in line to replace Kay should he step away from the show he's hosted for more than 20 years.
"I'm not going to leave Sirius, let's put it that way," the Radio Hall of Famer said. "I love Sirius so much. They've been good to me. I'm not ruling out the idea somebody takes an hour of Sirius and puts it on terrestrial radio. That would be different . . . But Sirius in the afternoon, I'm going to do that as long as they'll have me, to make a long story short."
Russo said that while SiriusXM enjoys the attention he gets from his show on MLB Network and his appearances on ESPN's First Take -- including an upcoming venture with his former co-host Mike Francesa -- his work on satellite radio remains what he loves most.
"I would never sit there and say, 'You know what, I've had enough Sirius, I'll go back to terrestrial'. I would not do that."
A report from The New York Post's Andrew Marchand claims Kay is "seriously considering" leaving his radio show, going as far to say Kay --who's contract ends in September -- has told 98.7 ESPN New York executives that his expectation is he will end his radio show at the conclusion of his current deal.
