Please Heal Yourself After a Toxic Job

Nowadays, many look for work environments that will allow them to thrive and do not tolerate poor treatment or office drama. A toxic work environment is now the leading reason for people to resign from their jobs and a motivator for them to be more selective about the next workplace they sign up to.

However, it is easier said than done that one can recover immediately after leaving a toxic job. While you will be relieved, you are away from that environment, and there will still be effects that will make it difficult for you to adapt to your next role.

Fortunately, there are ways to help yourself recover from a toxic job, and some of them are as follows:

Find Closure

Depending on your experience with your previous employer, you may find yourself holding some grudges. You may even find yourself thinking back about your last experience and wondering if things could have been different if you had made other decisions back then. Lingering on these thoughts can make it difficult for us to overcome the experience because we will be hung up on answering why we ended up leaving the job we initially loved. As a result, we won't be able to transition to a new job and focus on it well.

An excellent way to deal with these emotions is by giving yourself time and space to grieve over this loss and say your goodbye. For example, you can delete or archive your old work files, buy a new computer or write a goodbye letter to your previous job.

Know Your Worth

If you were not valued at your last work, you might find it hard to determine your worth when you leave that position. Please write down your strengths and accomplishments in chronological order and use them as a guide to update your job application. Knowing these points will also boost your confidence when you go to your job interview and know which jobs truly match your strengths.

Review your Experience and What You Learnt from it

Even if you had a bad experience in your previous work, you could gain knowledge from it, which will allow you to become stronger and know how to avoid having the same experience. Take a look back on why you thought the previous office was toxic, and think about how you can avoid experiencing the same in your current work. Knowing these points can also help you see if you are in a great position to propose changes in your next job.

Create Plans for Potential Triggers

It is unavoidable that there will be instances in your new job that will remind you of the stressful situations you felt in your previous job. Try identifying these situations early on and make a plan to help you deal with them once it happens. For example, if you feel you are being excluded from the team, calm yourself with a breathing exercise and speak to your boss or team.

Always Stay Positive

Once you find your bearings, it is always best to keep a positive attitude to help ensure that your work habitat remains healthy. Always stay professional regarding your previous job and surround yourself with the right people to keep yourself in high spirits.

It is undeniable that it may take a while before we fully recover from a negative experience like being employed in a toxic environment. However, once you make the step and put your mind to it, you can press forward and recover from your experience. Try these tips above to get started and rebuild your confidence. Remember, don't be afraid to seek help if you need extra support as you start your new job, free from any worries and fears caused by your previous job.
