The 2022 football season hasn't been very kind to the Miami Hurricanes. Head coach Mario Cristobal believes the media may be a factor in the program's rebuilding efforts.
The Hurricanes started off the new campaign ranked in the top 25, winning their first two games before hitting a recent rough stretch in which they've lost four of their last five. It's disappointing for a team that many expected to compete for an ACC title game appearance. But Cristobal told reporters they're making it hard to get the program pointed in the right direction.
"I think you guys try to affect it more than anything. We have, from day one, made it very clear what we're here to do and what we're here to build," said Cristobal. "Our history has shown that we don't sell a dream, we don't sell any false hope. We sell the reality of a track record in what we've done, where we've been, and how we've done it."
Miami has struggled over the last four seasons to break away from being a .500 team. The Hurricanes were 8-3 in 2020 but have had just one 10-win season since 2003. In that same span, Miami is 3-11 in bowl games.
Cristobal, who is in his first season as the Hurricanes coach, said he's sticking with what he has regardless of what those covering the team think about the program.
"We're going with what we started with and making it the very best that we can," he said. "It's a different starting point than at other places and that's fine too. There is no flinch. There is no hesitation. It's just time to go to work. I don't think anyone should ever shy away from that or look at that in a negative aspect."
