We've heard rumors for some time now that Samsung is working on a more affordable foldable smartphone. This "Galaxy Fold Lite" would have the same form factor as the flagship Galaxy Z Fold series but will cost significantly less.
That device is yet to materialize but if an outlandish rumor is to be believed, Samsung is apparently going to launch a foldable smartphone as part of its mid-range Galaxy A series by 2025.
Is the foldable Galaxy A smartphone a good idea?
The prediction comes from @chunvn8888 who is one of the many habitual tech leakers on Twitter. A subsequent tweet mentioned that Samsung is aiming to release this foldable Galaxy A smartphone either in 2024 or 2025.
No further information is provided and that's obviously going to make one question the authenticity of this prediction. It hasn't been said what form factor this foldable Galaxy A smartphone will have. Is it going to be more like the Galaxy Z Flip or the Galaxy Z Fold?
The Galaxy A is a mid-range series. The smartphones in this series rarely cost more than $700. Given the cost of materials and the complexity involved, even if the tech advances by 2025, could it be realistically possible for Samsung to sell a foldable smartphone for that much?
Let's not forget that the Galaxy Z Flip 3 is already at $999. This makes it cheaper than some of Samsung's high-end devices like the Galaxy S22 Ultra. Launching a cheaper variant would require Samsung to strip the device of many components that make it a premium device.
Customers will thus end up with a device that just folds but leaves a lot to be desired in other departments. Considering that Samsung views foldables among its most premium devices, doing this would be counterproductive.
