It is hard to find anyone that didn't greet the news of Mark Emmert stepping down as NCAA President with something along the lines of "don't let the door hit you on the way out."
Emmert says he will leave the position no later than June 30, 2023. He will go earlier if a successor is named and ready to take over before that date.
The news drew plenty of reactions from the people that cover college sports. Between their own reactions and the reactions they reported hearing from people in the college sports industry, Emmert's exit is largely being celebrated.
Mark Emmert has been blamed for a number of the NCAA's failures. Chief among them was the sloppy way the organization handled name, image and likeness legislation across several states that would allow athletes to profit for the first time. He also saw the NCAA's practice of paying its athletes with educational benefits ruled a violation of antitrust law in a rare 9-0 decision by the US Supreme Court. Plenty of those commenting alluded to Emmert presiding over what could well be the beginning of the end of the organization.
A final category of reactions can best be described as questioning "what took so long?".
