Chris Wallace decided to leave Fox News after 18 years at the network last December. The veteran news host is now on CNN's streaming service, CNN+, hosting a new show called "Who's Talking to Chris Wallace?"
Since his departure, Bret Baier and John Roberts are among those who have filled the "Fox News Sunday" chair. However, the network did have a long-term replacement target to replace Wallace.
The Daily Beast's Source Material newsletter reports ABC News Chief Washington Correspondent Jonathan Karl was the name Fox News had circled for the Sunday show. He had conversations with Fox News execs but decided to pass on the opportunity.
"We had very informal conversations with Jonathan Karl as we routinely have with many talent across all media—offers are never extended in these discussions, therefore nothing was declined," a Fox News spokesperson emailed Source Material.
While Fox News looks for Wallace's long-term replacement, their former anchor spoke with The New York Times regarding his decision to leave the cable news channel, which he states created an "unsustainable" environment following the 2020 election.
Nonetheless, the report also states the network was okay with seeing Wallace leave for CNN+ as it saves them $9 million a year, which is what the host earns now with their rival new channel.
