The San Francisco 49ers appear to be entertaining trade offers for Deebo Samuel, but beyond that few details are available.
Niners GM John Lynch held a press conference on Monday and talked about the situation, saying how he never would've imagined the situation with Samuel could've gotten to this point.
But don't count sportswriter Ray Ratto among those who saw anything of value in what Lynch had to say. Ratto joined Dan Dibley and Mark Willard on 97.5 The Game and said the 49ers could've done anything other than what they did.
"If you're not going to say anything, don't come out. Just say, 'I know what you want to know, I'm not telling ya, sorry,'" Ratto said. "Don't have the presser. A lot of teams try to do this, which is manage the news in such a way that you basically beat down any questions that you think might be uncomfortable."
That sentiment isn't just one held by Ray Ratto. Plenty of reporters will gripe privately about teams holding press conferences that turn out to be meaningless and/or trying to control the way a story is told by the press. He just happened to do it in front of a microphone that then broadcast the comments to the entire Bay Area.
In this situation, Ratto ultimately believes the team is going to pay Samuel instead of trading him. Samuel proved to be invaluable in the Niners run to the NFC title game this past season.
"Unless Kyle Shanahan has some secret plan to replace Deebo Samuel with something better, Deebo Samuel is what you deal with," he said. "Eventually you accept the fact that you're going to pay him more than Christian Kirk, becuase he's worth more than Christian Kirk. It's not that hard."
