The revival of the USFL kicked off a couple weeks ago, and the league's opening game garnered plenty of attention. It's the games after that first one, though, that have Pat McAfee concerned about the league's future.
McAfee on Monday took a poll of the studio, asking everyone if they checked out any USFL action this past weekend. The general consensus was no, and producer Gump Cathcart said at least for him, it came down to there being more important sports offerings available.
"There's so much shit going on right now," he said mentioning the ongoing NBA playoffs, the NHL and MLB. "It's tough."
Pat McAfee and co-host A.J. Hawk mentioned the sparse attendance in the stadium in Birmingham, where all USFL games are being played. McAfee doesn't see the league working out.
"They're dead, dude," McAfee said. "They're so dead."
McAfee mentioned Dwayne Johnson buying and re-launching the XFL and partnering with the NFL to use tryout some new technology as a sort of guinea pig league. McAfee said that partnership should be an advantage, but the USFL's real problem comes down to a lack of player name recognition. He suggested that perhaps the league should allow some of the players lower on team rosters to play spring ball.
"I'd like there to be a league that is an opportunity for guys to put football on film, so that they can maybe get an opportunity in the NFL," he said. "These spring leagues feel like it's going to be very difficult unless it is run very, very well with good players."
Speaking of name recognition, it wasn't so long ago that McAfee revealed that FOX, which owns the league, had approached him about playing this season. He called the offer "one of the biggest smacks in the mouth I've ever received."
