ESPN rolled out the Kay Rod companion broadcast of Sunday Night Baseball this past weekend, and some of the reviews coming in Monday were not all that favorable
On 670 The Score in Chicago, the Parkins & Spiegel show weighed in.
"I want to thank you guys for watching as much of it as you did. I didn't hang out with KayRod," co-host Matt Spiegel said.
Producer Chris Tannehill, who said he's the resident Alex Rodriguez guy on the show, put it pretty bluntly.
"It was the worst display of television I've seen in a long time," he said. After hearing some clips from the show, Tannehill spoke on the combination of Michael Kay and A-Rod, saying that Kay was kind of left out there without a true broadcast partner to really banter with.
"He's used to having a partner that plays off of him better," he said. "So I can't really blame him a ton. But both of them sounded like they were being forced to do it."
"We need the natural feeling to want to spend time with people," Spiegel added. "Nobody wants to spend time with A-Rod. He's not natural."
They talked about how the feel of the ManningCast with Peyton and Eli is different, saying that the two brothers are definitely more likable. Co-host Danny Parkins said the simulcast also works because of the audience size.
"The audience for MNF is huge, so you can splinter off a million or two million people," he said. "Sunday Night Baseball's audience is like 1.5 million people for the main broadcast. So how many people do you really think were watching that thing?"
