The ongoing dispute between the Washington Nationals and their regional TV network partner MASN will apparently drag on. An appeals judge in New York denied a request by attorneys representing the Nationals that $23 million be put into an escrow account for broadcast rights fees.
MASN is majority-owned by the Baltimore Orioles. When the Montreal Expos relocated to D.C. in 2005, the rights deal was done out of concern for the long-term viability of the Orioles, who had long been the lone MLB team in the region up until that time.
The legal challenge stems from a dispute over TV rights fees dating back to 2012. The Balitmore Sun reports the $23 million requested represents the fees the Nats were owed for the team's media rights from 2012-2016.
"All we're trying to do is prudently manage the network," MASN and Orioles attorney Thomas H. Sosnowski told The Sun. "What we believe they're doing is trying to tie up MASN's cash reserves to try to put pressure on the network before the Court of Appeals can decide the case."
