Tony Massarotti could soon be inescapable for Boston sports fans. His afternoon show on 98.5 The Sports Hub is already listened to by one out of every four men in Boston. Now, even the ones that don't tune in could still hear him when the Red Sox play.
The Felger & Mazz co-host revealed on Wednesday that he did an audition for NESN and that he is a candidate to join the network's play-by-play team for Red Sox games.
"NESN and I have spoken," Tony Massarotti said. "I did an audition for them. I thought it went pretty well. I think they feel the same way, but I don't – I can't really speak for them, I can only speak for me. And you know, we're still talking."
Earlier in the day, Alex Reimer wrote on WEEI's website that Massarotti was one of three new analysts NESN was considering adding. Mazz wanted to address the rumor rather than say he couldn't talk about it, but he admitted there isn't much to report right now.
Massarotti noted that there is no deal done. That means at this point, there is nothing to report. He did an audition sometime in the last two months with Dave O'Brien.
Even Massarotti himself is surprised by the development. He noted that teams very rarely turn to media members as potential analysts on their broadcasts. He gave the team credit for thinking creatively and also for even considering him in the first place.
"I'm honored. I give NESN and the Red Sox a lot of credit because I've beaten the crap out of them for about 20 years, if not longer."
