The NFL is already kicking around the idea of entering the streaming content fight. Are prestige sports documentaries next? According to Sports Business Journal, a top league executive says the league has been speaking with film studios about expanding the reach of NFL Films.

Since The Last Dance aired on ESPN in 2020, streamers, networks and studios have all been trying to stake their own claim in the long-form documentary space. ESPN has partnered with Tom Brady on Man in the Arena. Apple TV+ has They Call Me Magic coming next month. The NFL doesn't want to get left behind.

"There's increasing demand for that type of content on streaming platforms and elsewhere," NFL chief media and business officer Brian Rolapp told SBJ.

A partnership with a Hollywood studio could mean a number of things. Apple just won an Oscar for best picture for its production Coda. That would make the technology giant a Hollywood studio now. The same is true for Amazon and Netflix.

Could a partnership to expand the scope and reach of NFL Films be a part of a sale of the league's media arm? Apple and Amazon have both been mentioned as possible destinations for those properties. Either company would give NFL Films an instant shot in the arm for both capital and distribution.
