Georgia lawmakers are currently working on a constitutional amendment that could potentially legalize sports betting in the state, as reported by the Associated Press.
With time running out in the current session for the state legislature, the House Economic Development and Tourism Committee on Monday approved an amended version of a Senate resolution and bill that would make betting on college and pro sports legal.
The constitutional amendment must pass both the House and the Senate with a two-thirds majority. It's part of a larger effort to legalize gambling on horse racing and bring casinos inside state lines, but it would still be allowed only in counties where voters approve.
The Georgia Lottery would oversee issuance of nine licenses to companies that would want to offer online sports betting in the state. Owners of a license would have to pay a $100,000 fee each year.
The state's professional sports teams, as well as Augusta National Golf Club, are supporting the legislation, which would see half of any betting proceeds going to HOPE college scholarships and state subsidies for pre-K and child care programs.
Georgia's legislative session adjourns on April 4.
