Purely from the viewpoint of ethics it's a disgrace that NATO doesn't defend Ukraine in the same way it would defend Estonia for example. Are civilian lives in Ukraine worth less than civilian lives in Estonia? Is the sovereignty of Ukraine worth less than Estonia's sovereignty? Of course not, because if you actually believe in universal ethics, in universal human rights, and if you actually support a genuine liberal world order of national sovereignty, then it defies basic logic to claim that universal ethics and the liberal world order are limited by formal membership in a regional military alliance.
But we all know that Western oligarchic elites are not real liberals. They use liberality as an excuse for accumulating wealth and power. They follow the "trickle down" logic of neoliberalism: the elite must first get insanely rich and powerful, and then some of this wealth can trickle down to the poor. Their mantra is to get rich while spreading "democracy". They use the ideology of liberality in the same way conquistadors used Christianity in earlier times.
The greedy and sometimes psychopathic attitude of the neolib/neocon elite make it not surprising at all that many of their "liberal" projects fail, as seen in the Middle East after 9/11, and it's not surprising that they occasionally start to turn a blind eye or talk about "realism" and claim that some things are "just not realistically possible" in situations where their own ideals demand action but in a way that requires genuine sacrifice. That's why they didn't stop the genocide in Rwanda.
Neoliberalism is based on greed and idealism, and therefore it's very difficult to predict when neolibs/neocons will actually live up to their own ideals. Sometimes they do, even when it requires great sacrifice. Other times they don't. It's a bit like charity. Sometimes they decide to help, sometimes they ignore you. But one thing is certain: this so-called "progressive" elite will always secure its own power and wealth. That's their first priority.
For example, they don't mind that the military-industrial complex earn money by sending weapons to Ukraine. Even when the equipment is donated, it is tax payers in the West who must ultimately pay for it, and that makes you rich if you have stocks in the military-industrial complex.
But the elite will not risk their own domestic power in the undemocratic and imperial US/EU by sending Western soldiers to Ukraine. They will maybe claim that it's too dangerous because it can trigger WW3. But they are willing to defend Estonia, a state right next to St Petersburg, even though it will probably lead to a nuclear holocaust. What is the difference between Ukraine and Estonia? The latter has formal membership in an exclusive club. Ukraine is not that lucky. It's just a partner of NATO. Its sovereignty and its children are therefore not as valuable, for all practical purposes, in real life, when it really matters.
I once supported color revolutions, also in Ukraine. But after two decades of seeing the hypocrisy, immorality and criminal negligence of the "liberal" elite, I'm finally done with it. Today I'm a 70% political realist, 30% idealist. Political realists look at the longterm big picture, and they have therefore always claimed that NATO's expansion eastward could backfire. George Kennan, the father of the Western containment strategy during the first Cold War, wrote in the New York Times in 1997:
A Fateful Error
"And perhaps it is not too late to advance a view that, I believe, is not only mine alone but is shared by a number of others with extensive and in most instances more recent experience in Russian matters. The view, bluntly stated, is that expanding NATO would be the most fateful error of American policy in the entire post-cold-war era."
Now, universal ethics and the idea of a liberal world order will always exist, as long as real liberals exist, so all the failures of neolibs/neocons in the past will in principle not invalidate the idealistic claim that NATO should now take a stand and send troops to defend Ukraine.
But even though moral principles always exist in the high-flying realm of idealism it's of course natural that an increasing number of people, like myself, will lose faith in these principles when so-called "enlightened" but greedy and corrupt liberal elites ignore universal ethics at will (when exploiting developing countries for example).
As long as fake "liberal" elites continue to disrespect genuine liberality and ignore true diversity I will use drone-surveillance.info to publish articles they will hate and maybe keep them up at night, hopefully, until they finally take liberal ideals seriously.
