Apple has finally added the option to utilise Face ID while wearing a face mask in iOS 15.4, over two years after the COVID-19 outbreak began. iOS 15.4 brings a new feature for unlocking your iPhone with Face ID even when wearing a mask.
So, iOS 15.4 seeks to address this by simply allowing Face ID to work when wearing a mask, focusing on features on the upper portion of people's faces to accurately recognise them and unlock the phone.
It's not the first time that Apple is willing to solve the Face ID / Mask dilemma. In last year's iOS 14.5 update, Apple added a function that automatically unlocks your iPhone when you wear an Apple Watch. The new Face ID mask support, on the other hand, is a lot more simple option that doesn't necessitate the purchase of additional Apple hardware.
After installing iOS 15.4 a splash screen will appear first, asking if you want to enable Face ID with a mask. The function is easy to set up but you will have to re-register your face ( Probably so Apple can fine-tune the details surrounding your eyes even more ).
Face ID with a mask, on the other hand, works incredibly well once you've registered your face. However, there are a few oddities. If you use Face ID with a mask and wear glasses, Apple now requires you to scan each pair of glasses you possess as a baseline. Also, Face ID doesn't work with sunglasses.
Apple also warns the customers that Face ID with a mask is less accurate than conventional Face ID. Even said, the simplicity of being able to unlock the iPhone without having to remove the mask or repeatedly enter the password is pretty handy feature to have.
iOS 15.4 is still in public beta and in the coming days, Apple will make iOS 15.4 and the essential new Face ID feature available to the general public.
