The purpose of an engineer is to find problems that exist in the world and fix them. To do this, every single type of engineer has to go through something called the design process. By following this process, an engineer can define a problem and then come up with a solution to fix that problem. Below is a picture of the design process.
The process starts with asking questions about the needs of people. There is no point in making something that people don't have a need for. So, it is important you ask people what they feel that they need and what any problems that they experience are. The next step is to research the problem. You need to learn as much as possible about the problem that you are trying to solve. By researching into the issue, you are able to understand exactly what needs to be done so you can start to come up with an idea that can fix it. The next step is to imagine possible solutions. This is the brainstorming step. You need to come up with as many ideas as possible that could possibly help solve the problem. This is just to put thoughts down so you can pick out the best possible idea. The next step is to plan by selecting a promising solution. After picking one of the brainstormed ideas, you need to make a plan on how you will carry that solution out. This way you have a process that you can follow when trying to create the product. You then can create a prototype. This will involve a lot of trial and error. Often times, the prototype will not work and so you will need to come up with how to improve it and make it work. The next step is to test the prototype. After you create the prototype, you will need to test it in all sorts of situations. You have to test it to see if it will work under different circumstances. The last step is to make any improvements and redesign as needed. This is to make the product perfect. You get rid of any imperfections and then it is ready to be used. After this an engineer can go back to step one and start the whole process over again.
If I were to improve this process at all I would add in a step to have people who would use the product try it out. I think that it is important that the tests that are done are not only tests done in a lab. You will not have perfect conditions ever in the real world, so, you need to ensure that it works how you want it to outside of the lab. Also, these people would have no idea how it works so you could get a sense of if the product is easy to use and if there is anything that could go wrong. By adding this step in to the process, a lot of issues could be solved before the product went out to the public. I also would not make the design process a circle. There should be arrows going backwards after the prototyping step. Sometimes, the idea that you have will not work how you expected it to, so, you need to go back to the brainstorming step and come up with new ideas.
