Is iMessage not working on your iPhone running iOS 15 or 14? Don't worry, many other users encounter this issue from time to time. It could be due to wrongly configured settings, the carrier not supporting the message you're trying to send, poor internet connection, etc.
Let's dive in and take a look at the quick solutions!
Quick Tips:
- Delete old conversations: One user on the Support forum noted that deleting old texts got iMessage working again. Strange, yes, but sometimes tricks like this work.
- Set Date & Time Automatically: A reader has noted that setting the date to automatic fixes the issue. To do so, open Settings → General → Date & Time and toggle the switch Set Automatically to on.
If the above tips didn't work out, try the following solutions:
- Check your internet connection
- Restart iMessage
- Sign out of your Apple ID and sign back in
- Set your phone number to Send and Receive Messages
- Update iOS
- Restore your device and set it up as new
1. Check your internet connection
First off, you must ensure you have a proper internet connection on your iOS device. iMessage may not work if there is poor Wi-Fi or cellular connection.
Turn Airplane Mode on/off
On some occasions, you may be able to fix the issue by simply turning Airplane Mode on/off. If your iPhone has a home button, swipe up from the bottom of your device to access Control Center and then tap the Airplane Mode button.
On an iPhone X or later (no home button), swipe down from the top right corner and then tap on the Airplane Mode button to turn it on. Wait for some time and then turn it off.
Turn Wi-Fi/Cellular on/off
Go to Setting → Wi-Fi/Cellular → Toggle it off. Now, restart your iPhone.
Once your device has restarted, turn on Wi-Fi/Cellular and try to send iMessage again.
Forget the Wi-Fi network and reconnect device to it
If you're using Wi-Fi, forget the network and reconnect your device to it.
- Open Settings → Wi-Fi.
- Tap the i button next to the network.
- Tap Forget This Network and tap Forget in the popup to confirm.

Reset network settings
Haven't fixed the problem yet? Try resetting the network settings on your device. This erases your Wi-Fi password, so make sure you have it on hand before resetting your network settings.
Open Settings → General → Reset → Reset Network Settings.
2. Restart iMessage
Head over to Settings → Messages and turn off iMessage if it's switched on already.
Then, force reboot your iPhone. To do so, press and hold the Home and sleep/wake buttons together until the Apple logo shows up on the screen.
On your iPhone X or later, press and release the volume down button, then press and release the volume up button. Next, press and hold the side button until you see the Apple logo appear on the screen.
Then, turn on iMessage and wait for the activation to finish. If it's working again, you're good to go. If it hasn't, move on to the next solution.
3. Sign out your Apple ID and sign back in
Try signing out of Apple ID and then signing back in. Here's how:
- Open Settings → Messages → Send & Receive.

- Tap your Apple ID and tap Sign Out.

- Next, quit Settings. Wait for some time and then sign in to your Apple ID again.
4. Set your phone number to send and receive messages
- Go to Settings → Messages → Send & Receive.
- You should see your number and an associated Apple ID listed in this list.
- You'll have to try a variety of methods to get iMessage working again. These include:
- Removing your email ID and using only your phone number
- Selecting either email or iPhone to test if iMessage works with any of these
- Select an email AND a phone number. After this, you'll see another section Start New Conversion from:, select your phone number for this
5. Update iOS
Keeping iOS up to date is one of the best ways to make sure your iPhone stays bug free. Many times I have successfully fixed annoying issues like an autocorrect bug or the camera focus issue just by updating my device. That's why I suggest you give it a shot as well.
Open Settings → General → Software Update. If there's an update available, tap Download and Install.
6. Restore your device and set it up as new
If the problem hasn't resolved itself after trying out all the aforementioned tricks, restore your iPhone using iTunes and then set it up as new. Before going for the kill, don't fail to back up your device.
Simply connect your iPhone to your computer → fire up iTunes or Finder and hit the Restore button.
Wrapping up…
The above-mentioned solutions worked for many users—including me. I hope one of them works for you!
