The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) welcomed the evacuation of 93 asylum seekers to Italy from Libya on Thursday (November 25), where they had been living in precarious situations with uncertain futures.
This group of 500 evacuees includes children, women at danger, survivors of assault and torture, and persons with major medical conditions. Some had just been released from detention, while others had been held captive by smuggling or trafficking organisations.
The asylum seekers boarded a UNHCR-chartered aeroplane to Rome from Tripoli. Five such flights will be planned over the course of a year. The evacuees will be able to petition for refugee status once they arrive, giving them access to safety and security-UNHCR
