Ernie Johnson has been speaking about his son Michael for years. Just this past summer, Michael and the coach of his high school's basketball team were the subjects of a speech Johnson gave to Nick Saban's players at the University of Alabama, which drew praise from people across the Internet.

Sadly, on Friday night, Ernie Johnson and his wife Cheryl announced that Michael had died. He was 33 years old.

The couple adopted Michael from an orphanage in Romania in 1991. The boy was 3-years-old at the time and suffering with duchenne muscular dystrophy. The people in charge of the orphanage tried to dissuade Cheryl from taking Michael home with her.

Johnson, who has hosted TNT's studio show Inside the NBA for the last 31 years, shared the tragic news on Instagram. He wrote "We lost Michael Johnson [sic] today and we're crushed. But we also know we'll see him again…and that sustains us."

Both Turner Sports and the NBA issued statements on Michael's passing.
