The culture war and Cold War 2 are relevant in a discussion about surveillance because the culture war leads to violent balkanization, a phenomenon which is used by intelligence agencies to justify surveillance, and Cold War 2 involves drones, Artificial Intelligence, and surveillance to stop espionage (in cyberspace).
Since we are in a culture war it's necessary to mention that I'm a 70% political realist (in the tradition of Morgenthau, Waltz and Mearsheimer) and a 30% moderate cultural conservative (in the tradition of Edmund Burke). Moderate conservatism and moderate liberality are the two pillars of constitutional democracies, a form of government I support because it allows real freedom and true diversity. In a constitutional democracy you have the liberty to for example be religious or an atheist, far-left or far-right, or something in the middle.
Moderate cultural conservatives have always cooperated with moderate liberals in the tradition of John Locke and John Stuart Mill. Genuine cultural conservatives believe that society should develop organically, from the bottom up. We are opposed to top-down social engineering. We reject Big Government and Big Business.
Moderate cultural conservatives support politeness, civility and reticence. We are therefore naturally opposed to bullying and harassment, and opposed to using violence against anyone living in a constitutional democracy (not counting judicially regulated self-defense). Consequently it follows logically that if we see a person who harasses an LGBT individual, for example, we'll try to stop this bullying. Not because he or she is LGBT but because he/she is a human being. Similarly, if an LGBT person is the victim of violence we'll defend him/her and help the police catch the perpetrator. Not because the victim is LGBT but because he/she is a human being protected by the rule of law.
Moderate cultural conservatives are opposed to any subcultural group, be it leftwing or rightwing, that wants to use the top-down power of governments or corporations in order to change the mainstream culture in a society. From this it follows logically that we are opposed to woke LGBT. The latter is here defined as LGBT activists who try to use the top-down power of corporations and the state in an attempt to influence a mainstream culture. The woke LGBT lobby uses propaganda in entertainment to spread LGBT values in mainstream cultures. If you are against all propaganda, including rightwing propaganda, it's just simple logic that you must also be opposed to LGBT propaganda.
In the culture war it's only natural that moderate cultural conservatives will always defend that LGBT individuals have the same classical liberal rights as everyone else in a constitutional democracy. And we defend their right to have these basic rights even if the woke LGBT lobby accuses us of being "oppressive" or "intolerant" in the culture war. Similarly, if I play a computer game and notice that someone in chat starts to harass LGBT individuals I will ask the bully to stop this harassment. I'm against all politicization of mainstream entertainment, so I'm therefore also against anyone who starts to express anti-LGBT sentiments in a game, because such expressions are totally irrelevant in a game, like starting to discuss LGBT while you play American football for example. It's just misplaced, out of order.
However, if the woke LGBT lobby keeps cooperating with corporations involved in surveillance capitalism and if neoliberal governments keep building a woke surveillance state, then it's the duty of moderate conservatives and moderate liberals to defend constitutional democracies against this threat, in order to protect the civil rights of all citizens, and that includes the civil rights of woke LGBT activists after a constitutional democracy has been restored and the surveillance state has been dismantled.
Glenn Greenwald, the gay Pulitzer Prize winner who helped Snowden, writes that:
Big Corporations Now Deploying Woke Ideology the Way Intelligence Agencies Do: As a Disguise
I view Greenwald and Chelsea Manning as heroes, so I'm not anti-LGBT, just anti-woke.
Since I'm a 70% political realist (a disillusioned idealist) I realize however that it might be impossible to stop the woke panopticon in the West. If that is the case then it's only natural that cultural conservatives will feel more at home in the conservative panopticon of Russia. Even the non-woke and non-libertine panopticon in China is better from a conservative perspective than ultra-"liberal" surveillance states in the West. London by the way had in 2021 more surveillance cameras than Beijing.
In other words, if the only choice in real life is between either a woke panopticon in the West or a conservative panopticon in the East, then the latter is the lesser evil from a cultural conservative viewpoint. But we moderate cultural conservatives should in principle never stop defending constitutional democracies, especially a Jeffersonian democracy.
