MSNBC host Joe Scarborough took aim at Facebook Monday following an explosive 60 Minutes interview with a whistleblower who claimed that the platform is intentionally damaging its young users.
The Morning Joe host compared Facebook's founder Mark Zuckerberg to "big tobacco" and noted that his popularity is on par with former President Donald Trump whose image took a major public relations hit following the U.S. Capitol riots on Jan. 6.
The comparison to big tobacco stems from a case 15 years ago that ended with a judge ruling that tobacco companies lied about the harmful effects of their product to the American people.
Monday, Facebook was dealt another blow when it suffered an outage that brought down WhatsApp and Instagram as well. The outage lasted more than six hours, affecting billions of users. Those difficulties kicked off Sunday when former Facebook employer Frances Haugen, the woman behind an explosive Wall Street Journal report said the company knows how badly its services are damaging the minds of young people.
"The thing I saw at Facebook over and over again," Haugen told Scott Pelley, "was there were conflicts of interest between what was good for the public and what was good for Facebook. And Facebook, over and over again, chose to optimize for its own interests, like making more money."
"You go to any college; they'll tell you that's a problem they have," Scarborough added. "You go to any high school counselors, and the same with middle school."
