A segment on "The View" regarding the death penalty topic led the panel to talk about Nikolas Cruz. The now 23-year-old pleaded guilty to 17 counts of murder and 17 counts of attempted murder in a Florida court this week.
Cruz was the shooter who killed students and faculty members at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in 2018. Following his guilty plea, he faces a minimum of life in prison and a maximum of the death penalty.
The hosts unanimously agreed that any heinous crime against children, such as the Parkland shooting deserves the heaviest penalty brought to the perpetrator.
Furthermore, co-host Ana Navarro stated that the Parkland parents advocating for the death penalty should be the only thoughts that should matter in this situation.
"I care more about how the families feel than I care about this guy being trapped or not being trapped," Navarro said. "And if the families are telling me that the way they're going to get closure is by him being put to the death penalty, then so be it. Because the priority, for me, is the families that had those lives stolen from them."
The jury selection in the penalty phase for Cruz is scheduled for January 4th.
