When Las Vegas Raider defensive end Carl Nassib came out earlier this month, he became the first openly gay player on an active roster in NFL history. The announcement was met with an array of support from fellow players, opposing teams (as well as his own in the Raiders), and the league. The latter added to that by putting out a a 30-second video on Twitter in support of Nassib.

"I am proud of the clear message this spot sends to the NFL's LGBTQ+ fans: This game is unquestionably for you," NFL diversity director Sam Rapoport told Outsports.

Among the messages that flash across the screen include: football is gay, football is lesbian, football is beautiful, football is queer, and football is bisexual, among others. The messaging is yet another changing of the guard for the league recently. Long standing as a rub-dirt-on-it sport, the NFL has put an emphasis on player safety following various studies on CTE. Also, last year, the league seemed to reverse course on its messaging surrounding kneeling during the national anthem in protest against police brutality.

It remains to be seen what ripple effects will emerge from Nassib's announcement moving forward, but the NFL made sure to let him know they are firmly in his corner.
