Food packaging plays an increasingly important role in the whole food chain from the field to the consumer's table. Packaging industry in India is growing as fast as food processing industry as a vital part. Food packaging has developed strongly during recent years, mainly due to increased demands on product safety, shelf-life extension, cost-efficiency, environmental issues and consumer convenience.
History of Food Packaging & Developments
What is the history of food packaging? When was food packaging introduced? history of food packaging timeline/history of food packaging & developments
In 1809 Nicolas Appert, Scientist preserved food in hermetically sealed glass jar in France. For this innovation he is known as the "Father of canning".
In 1950, US military developed a retortable pouch.
In 1956, Tetra Pack launched its tetrahedral milk carton.
In 1970, the bar code system for retail packaging was introduced in the USA.
In 1990, digital printing of graphics on carton sleeves and labels for food. packaging was introduced in the UK.
Types of Food Packaging
What are the different types of food packaging? What are the 4 types of packaging? What are the three types of food packaging? classification of food packaging, packaging for food products.
There are three main 3 types of packaging
Primary packaging
These include the packages which come directly in contact with food materials e.g. tin can, pet bottles and LDPE pauches, etc.
Secondary packaging
These packages hold primary packages to protect them from external damage. e.g. corrugated fiber box, cartons etc.
Tertiary packaging
These hold secondary packages and give proper strength to the stored products e.g. wooden box, cartons and containers.
Principles of food packaging
What are the principles of packaging? basic principles of packaging
Protection -- The package used for packaging material should protect product from physical, chemical and microbial hazards.
Preservation -- It should act as preservative by retarding the entry of microorganisms.
Presentation -- It should present the information about the content product in the packet.
Requirements of package
What are the legal requirements of food packaging? What are food packaging standards? What are the requirements of packaging? legal requirements for packaging
Package should be non-toxic
Protect against microbial contamination.
Act as moisture and gas barrier.
Protect against UV rays and Resistance to physical damage.
Package should be transparent and easy to open.
Should be Dispensing, resealing and Easy to dispose.
Meet size, shape and weight requirements.
Good appearance and print-ability.
Low in cost.
Food Packaging materials
What are the materials used for food packaging? What are the most common types of materials used for food packaging?
Earthen pots (Oldest method)
Wood as packaging materials
Glass (best in use)
Paper and paper based packaging materials (Eco-friendly and most trending)
Metal containers (for juicy and high moisture foods)
Plastic films (most common)
Laminates
Tetra brick aseptic packaging (for milk and milk products)
Earthen Pots
Generally made by the combination of two types of mud clay
The clay is mixed with water, shaped, finished, polished, dried and baked in a kiln.
commercially used for packaging of dahi, yogurt, ice cream and used as home water coder.
Paper and Paper based packaging
Paper is obtained from plant cellulose and hence considered as renewable resource.
Types of papers
Kraft paper
Parchment paper
Corrugated fiber boards
Sulphited paper
Grease proof or butter paper
Glassine paper
Wood as packaging materials
Products derived from wood are widely used in the packaging of food.
These are used for packaging of fresh fruits or vegetables as well as their processed products.
Glass
As related to food packaging, glass is chemically inert, therefore it is a safe packaging material.
The glass is commercially used for many food products such as beverages, ketchup, jam, etc.
Plastics
The different plastics used for food packaging are as follows 1. Low density polyethylene (LDPE) 2. Linear low density poly ethylen (LLDPE) 3. High density polyethylene (HDPE) 4. Poly propylene (PP) 5. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) 6. Biaxially oriented poly propylene (BOPP)
Tetra brik aseptic packaging
Aseptic packaging can be defined as the filling of a commercially sterile product into a sterile container under aseptic conditions and hermetically sealing the containers.
