Duke head basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski joined The Herd on Thursday to discuss his announcement that the 2021-2022 season will be his last in Durham. "Coach K" as he is affectionately known by his supporters and stiffly known by his detractors, has coached the Blue Devils since 1980, but told Colin Cowherd that it is the right time in his life to go in another direction.
"I am healthy, my wife is healthy, we are not retiring from COVID or the state of college basketball," he said. "It's time to do something else."
Krzyzewski and his wife Mickie have three daughters and 10 grandchildren, which K has alluded will occupy some of his retirement. In the announcement, he announced former Duke player and current associate head coach Jon Scheyer will succeed him following next season. Krzyzewski told Cowherd it was important for recruiting to make the announcement now rather than let it become the elephant in the proverbial recruit living room.
Cowherd asked Krzyzewski about how he has adapted to various evolutions in the game since his tenure began over four decades ago. Initially a vocal opponent of the one-and-done rule, Krzyzewski wound up becoming as successful as anyone with the model as a flurry of recruits from Zion Williamson to Kyrie Irving and Jayson Tatum have come through Durham.
"You have to adapt and create an environment conducive to success," he said. "You never adapt with the values of your organization: your integrity, courage, respect, selfless service, duty, loyalty, trust, those do not know an age. They're ageless."
Coach K pulled one of the most unexpected turns of the interview by taking a page out of Matthew McConaughey's playbook in Dazed and Confused when discussing his connection with his players.
"I'm 50 years older than the players but I've always been older," he said. "I've kept getting older and they stay the same age."
