On Monday, Craig Carton and Evan Roberts made their TV simulcast debut on SNY. The move to SNY officially leveled the playing field in terms of exposure with ESPN New York's The Michael Kay Show, which is simulcast on YES Network.
During the debut episode, co-host Craig Carton paid a special tribute to longtime WFAN host Mike Francesa while also getting back at Kay for something that happened years ago.
When Francesa left WFAN in 2014 and Kay topped him in the ratings, Kay began a show by throwing out a can of Diet Coke into a garbage can held by co-host Don La Greca, signifying the end of Francesa.
Those who listened to Francesa over the years know that he loves Diet Coke, making Kay's gesture distasteful to those at WFAN.
On yesterday's show, Craig Carton decided to right that wrong by bringing a case of Diet Coke on set with him.
"There is a new sheriff in town," said Carton. "And in honor of Mike Francesa, the Diet Coke in afternoon drive New York City will always be king. So it's out of the garbage can and something you'll have to deal with on a daily basis."
Carton continued by saying, "when you poured the Diet Coke in the garbage can, did you think that's was going to go unanswered forever"?
Moments later, one of the Diet Coke cans Craig Carton put on the desk in front of him exploded and sprayed him in the face.
"That's what you get for a nice gesture towards Mike," said Roberts. "You get attacked by a Diet Coke."
